Wind Science: 3 Simple Concepts

You don't need to be a scientist to get the gist of wind science for your home. It just takes some general understanding of the basic concepts. We are all going to have to get on board and learn a little bit of the science relating to renewable energy solutions sooner than later. That is because we have such a short supply of fossil fuels that we are going to have to do something to create a supply of energy beyond what we have now in very short order or we are going to lose our energy intensive lifestyle.

These are the main things you need to understand to have a grasp of wind science...

The wind has patterns everywhere but you cannot count on it - The wind patterns of various places around your house are complicated but they are relatively steady over time. There are several aspects of the wind that you need to be aware of - the wind is very capricious and does not fit a pattern over a short period of time, but rather only over a longer period of time. Also, over a longer period of time, you'll find that there are distinct frequency distributions of when the wind blows and how strong it blows. As well, there will be averages of wind velocity that will hold relatively constant over time. Therefore, wind science is predictable in the long term but not in the short term.

Wind science changes and advances all the time - This is not a new field at all but there are a number of advances that come out regularly that can really benefit you. For example, one area is in blade design. Wind turbine blades are becoming more efficient and a lot of that improvement comes from advances made by utilities dealing with large scale wind turbine projects - ironic, but this utility group is the very group you are trying to replace with your home wind turbine.

Wind science is very intuitive - There is no great difference in how a home wind turbine works and how the water wheel works. That makes the science relatively intuitive and easy to understand. If you can understand the basics of drag and how a viscous medium like water can move a physical device like wheel, then you are 99% there in terms of your understanding of wind science and how it works.

Concluding; wind science basics are not that complicated but you need to study the concepts before you forge ahead and buy anything.
