How To Make A Website: A Step-by-Step Guide

Creating a website can seem like a daunting task for the beginner, but this guide gives step-by-step instructions on how to make a website. Before the actual site creation can begin though, a couple of administrative steps must be taken.

Choosing an appropriate domain name is extremely important to the success of the website. Care should be taken in choosing the name. It is good for branding purposes to have the domain name reflect the company's name. If this is a site for an individual (without a company name) or if the company name is unavailable, the name should reflect the main subject of the site. For example, if the site sells children's clothing, this should be somehow reflected in the domain name. After choosing a domain name, it needs to be registered. There are a number of companies that register domain names, where the availability of the domain name can be checked at registration. As an additional service, some companies will register the name if they are used as the website host.

Next, the proper web hosting must be established. A web host is necessary for smaller companies and individuals because it provides the necessary server space for the website. It is from this server that the host company places the website on the internet for users to access.

Once these steps have been achieved, it is time to create the pages of the website. (The content contained in this step assumes that a professional designer will not be designing the website.) There are numerous web design software packages, also known as web editors (on disc, downloadable, and virtual), that will help create web pages, without needing in depth knowledge of the technical aspects of coding. A great feature that many web editors have is templates, which can be used to ease the process of creating backgrounds and graphics for the pages. Regardless of how the software is obtained (through purchase or for free) directions and/or tutorials should accompany the software. For additional assistance, a quick online search for tutorials can usually be found for almost any software on the market. Web editors vary in price from costly to free.

- The more costly editors usually have the most flexibility but unless the creator is technically adept, this type of software is usually not cost efficient for the beginner.

- Mid-range editors are a good option for the beginning website creator that wants some flexibility and control of the site. The website is created offline and then uploaded to the web host server. This type of site can be transferred to another web host company if desired. (This also applies to the aforementioned type of software.)

- Free editors are found online, are simple to use, and are usually part of a web hosting package. If the owner of the web editor is not the desired web host, this software should not be used because it is not transportable.

Once the website has been created, it must be tested. It is imported to ensure that all pages appear as they should and that all links work properly. It is important to test the site in all of the major browsers such as Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Chrome, Safari, and Opera. The website is now ready to receive visitors.
