Information On The Republic Of Singapore

The Republic of Singapore is a city-state located in South-east Asia, at the southern end of the Malay Peninsula with the Straits of Johor separating it from Malaysia. Singapore is an island country that is very urbanised and cosmopolitan.

In 1819, Thomas Stamford Raffles, the founder of Singapore, signed a treaty for the British East India Company to develop Singapore as a British trading colony. With migration from Malaya (now Malaysia) and various other parts of Asia including China and India, Singapore's population reached to over 100,000 from 1,000 in 50 years doing work such as mining and working in rubber plantations. Occupied by the Japanese during World War II and then repossessed by the British in 1945, Singapore declared independence in 1963, joining with Malaya, Sabah and Sarawak. In 1965 it gained independence from those states and became what it still is to this day - the Republic of Singapore.

Consisting of 63 islands such as Jurong, Pulau Ubin, Pulau Tekong and Sentosa, Singapore is connected to Johor, Malaysia by the Johor-Singapore Causeway and the Tuas Second Link. As a major international transport hub in Asia, Singapore's Changi airport - rated as one of the world's best - plays host to over 80 airlines connecting it to about 200 cities in almost 70 countries. Singapore Airlines is the flag carrier airline of the country and is also the world's second largest airline with shares in Virgin Atlantic, Silk Air and Tiger airways.

Singapore has a host of things to see and do, with attractions like the Singapore Zoo Night Safari. Those travelling with children will relish the chance to take the family on a tour through 40 hectares of jungle at night, travelling around the zoo in an open tram and spotting animals in their natural habitat. The zoo also offers a walking trail with a tour guide to get a closer view of the animals. Singapore has an island resort on Sentosa Island, reachable by a scenic cable car ride. Among the highlights here include the Dolphin Lagoon, the Underwater World Oceanarium and a light and water show called 'Songs of the Sea'. Those with kids will find a day of fun and excitement at the Universal Studios at Sentosa Island. The first of its kind to open in South-east Asia, the park has over 20 attractions in themed zones with roller coaster, boat and merry-go round rides, a beautiful castle and Shrek's swamp.

The world's largest observation wheel is located in Singapore, called the Singapore Flyer. With a diameter of 150 metres and 165 metres high it is over 30 metres higher than the London Eye. The Singapore Flyer has 28 capsules that are air-conditioned and carry up to 28 passengers in each. A complete rotation of the wheel takes approximately 30 minutes with panoramic views of city sights, covering Marina Bay, Raffles Place and the Singapore River.

There is a diverse range of shopping, dining and entertainment options in Singapore, and those visiting will definitely not be disappointed.
