How To Buy A Website Domain Name

Before you can launch your new website, you need to buy a domain name. This will be unique to your site alone. It will be something that no one else owns and that no one else can purchase. In the early days of the Internet, it was easy to get any name that you wanted because most of them were not yet taken. Now, you have to be a bit creative. People have purchased many of the names that exist, and they all have to be unique so that there is no confusion from one site to the next. Just as there should not be two homes with exactly the same address, there should not be two sites with the same domain name.

Buying one is easy. All that you have to do is go to a domain name provider. They will give you a tool that you can use to check the name that you want. This will tell you if someone already has purchased it. You will also be shown other names that are close so that you can decide if you want to use them instead. You can decide if you want the address it end in .com, .net, .biz, or something else altogether. Even if the .com name that you want is taken, you may be able to get the same site if it ends in .org.

After you select the name that you want, you have to put in your identifying information and your payment information. This just includes your address, your name, your contact information, and things of this nature. It will all be very basic, and it should not present you with any problems. It is important that you do all of this the right way, though, or you could run into some issues. All of the information has to match in order for the sale to be final.

Once it is, the company will register the URL in your name. You will be able to link it to the company that is hosting your site, if this is a different company than the one that is providing you with the URL, and you can then start putting up your pages. They will be available for everyone to see right away. You can also choose what pages you want to be displayed and what ones still need work. You can then upload those that need work without putting them online, so no one will be able to see them other than you. This is a good thing to do for a site that is still in progress, and most sites always have a few pages that are under construction, even the ones that have been up on the Internet for many years.

This is all that it takes to buy a domain name. You do need to know that you will have to purchase the name again every year or two, depending on your contract with the company. They will send you an email message telling you that your name has almost expired. If you do not wish to keep it any longer, you can just ignore this message. The domain name will be put back into circulation and your site will be erased. The rates for these extensions may be higher than the initial rates.
