Why You Don't Need New Golf Clubs

Many golfers think the problem with their game is their golf clubs. This is not always the key to your game, but we all get sucked in by the so-called new technology, the marketing of golf clubs companies, and the thoughts of having new clubs in our bags. There is a simple way to tell if you need new golf clubs or if you should work on something else.

Steps to Decide Whether you Need New Clubs or Not

1. How old are your Clubs?

If your clubs are over 5 years old, then it might be time for new ones. However, if you just got new clubs last year or even two years ago, you probably don't need new clubs. The only reason some PGA professionals change clubs every year is because their sponsors make them play new clubs. It's part of their contract, but guys like Tiger Woods don't change their clubs because of sponsors.

2. Are your Clubs in Good Shape?

Golf clubs are made to last for a very long time. Unless you have broken shafts, cracked clubheads, or another issue with your clubs, you probably don't need new golf clubs. You might need new grips and all golfers should consider new grips about once or twice a year, depending on how much you play the game.

3. Do you want New Clubs because you are not Hitting the Ball well?

Sometimes golfers think new clubs will change the way they hit the golf ball. This comes from the marketing of the industry telling you that you can gain distance, accuracy, and play like the pros if you get these new clubs. Understand golf club manufacturers have to sell their clubs every year, but that does not mean you need new clubs.

It takes time to learn how to hit new clubs and it can be very difficult to go through this process. Most golfers need at least 5,000 golf balls to learn a new set of irons and build the necessary confidence. That is a lot of pounding balls at the range just because you think you need new golf clubs.

When to Consider New Golf Clubs

There is a good time to consider new golf clubs and it is when you have changed your swing, after an injury, or when they just simply get old. Usually changing your clubs about every three to five years (depending on how much you play) is about all you need. The driver is no exception to this rule and you don't need a new one every single year.

Yes, clubmakers will try to convince you that you can gain 17 more yards with their new and improved clubs or you can hit the ball even further with their new driver. This is marketing and it does not mean you need new clubs. What good will more distance do, anyway, if you cannot hit the ball accurately?

When you see commercials with professionals gaining yardage with these specific clubs, you also have to remember they are able to hit the ball consistently every single time. If you cannot shoot at least 85 every single time you play 18 holes, then new clubs will most likely do very little for you. It is not always the golf club's fault and most of the time it is the golfers' swing that needs fixed before considering new clubs.
